GUESTS: Homer Hickam and Roy Lee Cooke
Homer excuses himself from talking to Dorothy, and walks over to Valentine.
Dorothy is disappointed.
“Good luck,” says Dorothy.
“Thanks,” says Homer. He turns to the crowd.
“Hey, everybody, can we have your attention, please?” The clouds part as sunshine beams down on the townspeople.
“Come on, Homer. Let ‘er fly!” shouts someone in the crowd. The audience laughs.
“We’re gonna launch the rocket, but we’d like to say thank you first,” says Homer. “If it wasn’t for y’all, we’d never have gotten into any science fair. We’d probably never have gotten past blowin’ up my mom’s fence!”
Elsie laughs with the crowd.
“But we did, because of your help and support,” says Homer, holding up the science fair medallion. “And this is for Coalwood!” The crowd claps again.
“There are a few people who believed in us even before we did,” says Homer. “We’d like to dedicate this rocket to them. To Ike Bykovsky!”
The crowd applauds.
“To Mr. Bolden, who helped us so much,” continues Homer. Mister Bolden nods as the crowd applauds.
“To the person who first–” begins Homer.
