Homer walks into Miss Riley’s hospital room.

“Hello, Miss Riley,” says Homer.

“Hey, Homer,” says Miss Riley, smiling weakly. Homer shows Miss Riley the gold medal.

“You did it!” says Miss Riley. “I knew you would.”

“The Rocket Boys are going to college,” says Homer. “We all got scholarships.”

“And you know what?” says Miss Riley. “From now on, every school year. I’m gonna brag to all my new students about how I taught Homer Hickam and the Rocket Boys. Maybe one day, one of them’ll feel like they can do what y’all did.”

Later, Elsie drives Homer past the mine in their car.

“You know,” says Elsie,”just – stuff like that takes time.”
