John Hickam looks at Elsie, and smiles.
Later, at the Union Hall, Jake Mosby is talking with John about the strike settlement.
“I guess we all know this isn’t gonna fix things, at least, not for long,” says Jake. John looks around.
“We know you did what you could for us,” says Jake and shakes John’s hand.
“Jake,” says John, returning the handshake.
“Thanks,” says Jake.
John turns towards Leon Bolden.
“Leon,” says John.
“Yes, John?” asks Leon.
John leans in and says in a low voice, “Don’t you have some work to do?” Bolden smiles.
A new tapered bore nozzle is getting cut on the lathe. Time passes, and it becomes a shiny de Laval nozzle.
At a pay phone in the company store, the Rocket Boys, Mr. Bolden, Mr. Dantzler, and many townspeople surround Elsie, who is talking to Homer on a pay phone.
“It’s packed and on its way. Be at the bus station, eight AM” says Elsie.
“Okay, Mom, but how did you–?” begins Homer.
“Your father,” says Elsie. “It was your father.”
“Give ’em hell, Homer!” says Mr. Dantzler. The townspeople yell and clap.
“Good luck, sweetie,” says Elsie.
“Bye,” says Homer, hanging up the phone.
