GUEST: Coal Creek War Historian Barry Thacker
Jim Hickam steps inside the house.
John Hickam is reading the paper in the living room with Elsie.
“Well, they sure are getting themselves worked up,” says Jim. “Everybody’s saying this one’s gonna be a long one.”
“And it will, if I have anything to say about it,” replies John. “Ungrateful sons of bitches–”
Homer walks in.
“Mom, have you seen the big green suitcase?” asks Homer.
“Did you look in the attic?” asks Elsie.
“Yes, ma’am,” says Homer.
“I don’t know,” replies Elsie. She turns to her husband. “John, you know where the suitcase is?”
“How the hell should I know where the suitcase is?” John gets up and walks into the kitchen.
“I don’t know, sug,” says Elsie.
John walks toward the kitchen sink.
Outside, a car slowly passes by the house.
A shot rings out. John ducks as the kitchen window breaks.
“John?” calls Elsie, worried. John runs to the front door.
“Y’all stay inside!” shouts John. John runs onto the front porch.
“Vernon!” he yells, as the car speeds off.
“I’m gonna kill that son of a bitch!” says Jim.
“Aww, don’t be a damn fool,” says John.
“Alright, well what are we gonna do?” asks Jim.
