Quentin asks Homer, “Are you gonna tell Roy Lee and O’Dell where I live?”

Homer smiles. “It wouldn’t matter if you lived in the governor’s mansion,” says Homer. “They’d still think you’re weird! I’ll see you at dawn.”

“Don’t you have to go to the mine?” asks Quentin.

Homer shakes his head. “I don’t work there anymore,” says Homer.

The next morning, Quentin and Homer meet at the ashes of the blockhouse, with a length of rope. They start counting off the distance as they trade places

“One,” says Homer.

“Two,” says Quentin.

They continue measuring through the forest.
