Sputnik flies through the night sky as the elevator winch starts up.

The miners pass into darkness as the elevator descends.

“Turn your light on, boy,” one of the miners tells Homer.

Soon, the elevator reaches the base of the mine. The miners are barely visible, except for the lights on their helmets.

Homer meets Jake Mosby, who smiles at him.

Some time later, John Hickam returns to his home in an ambulance.
