GUEST: Mine Ventilation and Emergency Services Branch Chief Thomas Morley, MSHA
The townspeople rush forward. Homer tries to see what’s going on.
In the rain, miners hug their wives.
A covered body is carried on a stretcher.
“Who is it?” asks a woman.
Homer uncovers the body.
“It’s Ike Bykovsky,” says another miner. Homer turns to follow Ike’s body.
“It’s John Hickam!” yells another miner. Homer turns around.
John Hickam is supported by two miners. He’s badly injured.
“Dad!” yells Homer.
“The cable snapped. May have fractured his skull!” explains one of the miners. They put John Hickam on another stretcher.
“Out of the way!” yells a miner. “Move back, folks. Let us through here.”
“I’ll tell you what, Homer,” says Jake Mosby. “A dozen men would’ve died today if it hadn’t been for your dad.”
John Hickam is placed in an ambulance.
