As the pickup truck pulls in front of the Hickam house, Homer jumps off the back of the truck and races in the front door.

“Mom! Mom!” yells Homer, hurrying through the house. He finds Elsie in the kitchen.

“Your father always has to be the big hero,” says Elsie, staring blankly. “I swear to God, if he gets killed, I won’t shed a tear.” An ambulance sounds in the distance. Homer runs to the mine, where townspeople wait anxiously.

At the mine, the lift winch activates.

“It’s comin’ up!” yells a miner.

The elevator arrives, and helmeted miners spill out of the elevator gates.
