“Be a heck of a waste of a bomb,” says Roy Lee, dismissing worries of the Soviets dropping a bomb on Coalwood.
Scene shifts to breakfast at the Hickam household. John is discussing the football season with Jim.
“The first game against Welch, that’s the one that’s gonna draw the scouts,” says John.
“Yeah. Welch knows it too. They’re gonna be coming after us,” replies Jim.
“Well, y’all be careful, Jim,” says Elsie. “Last year, those two boys from Welch got their arms broken.”
“Well, they started it,” says Jim. John laughs.
“It don’t matter much who started it,” says Elsie. “I don’t call that football.”
“You don’t worry about Jim,” says John. “Ain’t nobody on the Welch team that can catch him. I wish the scouts could’ve seen that first game with Bluefield-”
“I’m gonna build a rocket,” Homer interrupts, suddenly. “Like Sputnik.”
Everyone looks at Homer, blankly.
“Well, I’m not sayin’ it’s gonna go up in space or anything,” says Homer. “but I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna build a rocket.”
“Well,” says Elsie. “Just don’t blow yourself up.” Jim laughs.
“More eggs, anybody?” asks Elsie.
Some time later, Homer is in his front yard, with a small projectile.
“Nice rocket, Homer,” says Roy Lee.
“How high do you think it will fly?” asks O’Dell.
“Well,” says Homer, “I got it packed with-“
