Homer asks Roy Lee why “the damn jocks be the only ones gettin’ scholarships?”
“They’re also the only ones that get the girls,” replies Roy Lee. “This burns my ass.”
The two give the Plymouth a final shove, as O’Dell steers the car in front of the Olga company store.
Inside the store, Ike Bykovsky shows a newspaper to the boys. The headline says, “SOVIET UNION LAUNCHES FIRST EARTH SATELLITE.”
What do you boys think about this?” asks Ike Bykovsky. “Isn’t that something?”
“Let ’em have outer space,” says Roy Lee. “We got rock ‘n’ roll!”
I’m with you. We got enough to worry about down here,” says Mr. Dantzler. He turns to Homer. “Homer, your dad say anything about any layoffs?”
“No,” replies Homer.
“Have they pulled any more pillars?” asks Dantzler.
“He didn’t say,” says Homer.
“Does he talk at all?” asks Dantzler.
Homer pauses. “Oh yeah, he talks,” says Homer.
In the mine, John Hickam is yelling at his foreman.
“Damn it, Jake! Didn’t I tell you to put some men to work on those roof bolts? Was I talkin’ to the wall?” says John.
“I’m sorry. We was just tryin’ to get–” begins Jake.
“Make sure the hoot owl shift sets those timbers by the vent!” says John. “Two more days on that block, we’re gonna be down-“
