Roy Lee is being beaten by his stepfather.<\/p>\n

“You couldn’t stop, man. You couldn’t!” says Roy Lee’s stepfather.<\/p>\n

John Hickam points at Homer. “Get in the car, Homer! Homer, get in the car!” says John. John hurries across the street to Roy Lee.<\/p>\n

“Idiot! I ought to goddamn kill ya,” says Roy Lee’s stepfather, Vernon. John grabs him by the arm and shoves him against a wall.<\/p>\n

“We ain’t at the mine now. This ain’t your business,” says Vernon.<\/p>\n

“You get in the car with Homer, son,” says John to Roy Lee. John turns to the stepfather.<\/p>\n

“You listen to me, you drunken son of a bitch,” says John Hickam. “If that boy’s father was alive, he’d kick your ass. So I’m gonna have to do it for him. If I see him with a bruise, you get a scar. If I see him with a limp, you get crutches! You hear me? Do you hear me?” John lets go of the stepfather and walks back to the car.<\/p>\n

“You know, I’m reportin’ you to the union!” shouts Vernon.<\/p>\n
