“What in the world is goin’ on?” asks Miss Riley. The Rocket Boys are in handcuffs in the Principal’s office.<\/p>\n

“Miss Riley, this does not concern you,” replies Principal Turner.<\/p>\n

“You have these boys in handcuffs!” says Miss Riley. “You have these boys in handcuffs in a high school, Mr. Turner!”<\/p>\n

“You probably heard about the forest fire last week over by Welch,” says the state trooper. “A lot of timber went up in smoke.”<\/p>\n

“Mister Turner, you take these handcuffs off these boys!” says Miss Riley.<\/p>\n

“They found a rocket on the side of the road,” says Principal Turner.<\/p>\n

“We knew it started the fire, ma’am. What we didn’t know is where it came from… till this morning,” says the trooper, handing Miss Riley the newspaper.<\/p>\n

“Mr. Hickam, can you account for all your rockets?” asks Principal Turner.<\/p>\n

“No, sir. I can’t,” says Homer.<\/p>\n

The troopers lead the handcuffed boys through a crowd of students. Val watches them leave.<\/p>\n

Later, at the courthouse, John Hickam walks with Homer.<\/p>\n

“If you weren’t a minor, you’d be in the state penitentiary,” says John.<\/p>\n

“I know, Dad,” says Homer.<\/p>\n

“Homer,” says John, “I’ve been confused by you. I’ve been mad as hell at you. But it’s the first time in your life I’ve been ashamed of you.”<\/p>\n

Across the street from the courthouse, Roy Lee’s stepdad is beating on Roy Lee.<\/p>\n

“Stop!
