GUEST: Actor Will Lee Scott
Later in the day, the boys loosen a single rail and try to lift it.
“Go, go!” shouts O’Dell, struggling with the heavy piece of steel.
“This thing weighs a ton all by itself!” shouts Roy Lee, as the rail moves off to the sides of the ties.
“Four hundred pounds,” says O’Dell.
“Four hundred pounds?” says Roy Lee, incredulous.
“All right,” says O’Dell. The four boys get on the track side of the rail to push the steel off the ties.
“O’Dell, you’re sayin’ this thing is worth a buck sixty-five?” asks Homer.
The rail finally falls over and lands at the bottom of the track bed. The boys hoot and laugh, then sit down on the railroad ties.
In the distance, a train whistle blows.
The boys look around, uncertain what to do. The whistle gets louder.
“O’Dell?” says Roy Lee.
“It’s abandoned,” says O’Dell, puzzled. “Uh, look at the rust. Caretta number two, shut down in ’51.”
The train whistle is getting very loud now.
“Shit!” yells O’Dell.
“Get it up! Get it up! Just get it up!” The boys try to lift the 400-lb rail back onto the tracks, but it’s no use.
