GUEST: Roy Lee Cooke

Mr. Bolden explains the heat from the exhaust “melted the washer.”

“It’s referred to as a nozzle, sir,” corrects Quentin.

“Son, you can call it whatever you wanna call it,” says Bolden. “but you’re gonna have to have a better steel that can take the heat. Now I’d say SAE 10-20 bar stock ought to do you fine. And I can order it for you.”

“Well, that’d be great, Mr. Bolden!” says Homer.

“But it’s kind of expensive,” says Mr. Bolden.

“Oh,” says Homer, thinking about the cost.

On a rusted railway branch line, the boys are pulling up rail spikes with crowbars.

“Twelve miles of scrap iron, and all we gotta do is pop it loose,” says O’Dell.

“Yeah, and what are we gonna tell the railroad when they catch us pryin’ up the track?” asks Roy Lee.

“It’s abandoned,” says O’Dell. “See, the county’s covered with abandoned spur lines. A mine shuts down, the track just rusts over.” With a grunt, he pulls up a single spike and hands it to Quentin. “Eight dollars and twenty cents.”

“This is worth eight-twenty?” asks

“A ton,” clarifies O’Dell. “Come on.” O’Dell waves the boys up the rail line.
