“Hey, Homer!” says Mr. Bolden. “I heard you tellin’ Ike you were gonna be shootin’ off another rocket up here today. I thought that might be somethin’ we’d like to see.”
Later, Roy Lee lights the fuse on a rocket and starts running away.
“Whoa!” says Roy Lee.
“Nine. Eight. Seven,” the boys count down. “Six. Five. Four. Three. –” The rocket ignites early and takes off at an angle – – right towards the Bolden family.
“Hey, look out!” yells Roy Lee. Mr. Bolden hits the ground, as the rocket passes right next to him.
“Mr. Bolden!” shouts Homer, who runs and picks Bolden off the ground. “Mr. Bolden, are you okay?”
The other boys pick up the smoking rocket.
“I’m all right.” says Mr. Bolden.
“I’m sorry about that,” says Homer.
“That’s all right,” says Bolden. “Homer, I flew with the Red Tails in World War II, and seein’ that rocket come at me — it almost took me back there!” Roy Lee arrives with the rocket body.
“Hey,” says Bolden, “Let me have a look at that thing.” He examines the tail.
“That’s a good job on the weld, Homer,” says Bolden, pointing at the washer at the base of the rocket, “But the heat from the exhaust -“
