“That good?” says O’Dell. “Well, why didn’t you say so? Come on. Give me that.” O’Dell takes the box of rocket gear from Homer.

“Quentin,” says Homer, as he hands Quentin another box.

O’Dell laughs. Homer laughs, too.

“What?” says Homer, as Quentin nudges him with his elbow.

Later, atop a coal shale heap, the boys survey a barren landscape.

“We hiked eight miles for this?” asks Quentin.

“Oh, it’s great!” says Homer. “What should we call it?”

“How ’bout a slack dump?” asks Roy Lee.

“What about ‘No Man’s Land’?” asks O’Dell.

“Cape Coalwood,” says Homer. “I mean, it’s perfect. We could build a blockhouse over there, and a launch pad.”
