GUEST: American Welding Society President Michael Krupnicki

“Searchin'” by The Coasters plays.

In the Hickam basement, the boys assemble their first rocket.
Roy Lee saws a metal pipe, while O’Dell saw off a broom handle.
Homer and Quentin mix some propellant, then sniff it. They both say “Eww!” and move away.

Homer solders a washer to the base of the rocket. Roy Lee says “Ow!” when the soldering iron gets too close.

“I’m sorry,” says Homer.
O’Dell sands the nose cone.
“You missed a spot,” says Quentin. O’Dell glares at him.

Elsie starts to walk down to the basement with a load of laundry. She pauses, watching the boys working for a while, then smiles and heads back upstairs.

“This thing’s startin’ to look like a rocket,” says Roy Lee.

“Listen to this,” says Homer. “‘Weld the washer to the base of the rocket body, creating a combustion chamber and nozzle.”

“We don’t know how to weld,” says Roy Lee

“Your brother’s in metal shop,” says O’Dell. “Maybe he could, uh–” Homer just glares at him.

“Do we really need this nozzle thing?” asks O’Dell.
“For cryin’ out loud!” says Quentin. “The nozzle’s the most important part. It directs the flow of the hot gases!”

“Hey – cool it, Quentin!” saus Roy Lee
